The University of Washington (UW) played its first football game on Thanksgiving 1889, just a few weeks after Washington itself became a state. From the late nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieth century, Seattle area high school and college football games quickly grew into both a theater for excellent coaches and standout players, along with spaces for people from across the city to gather and cheer for their favorite teams.
