Gil Dobie, University of Washington football coach, Seattle, circa 1915
Order an ImageAfter two undefeated seasons with North Dakota State, Gilmore “Gil” Dobie coached the University of Washington football team from 1908 to 1916. While his pessimistic attitude earned him the nickname “Gloomy Gil,” his coaching skills during his 9 seasons earned the “Purple and Gold” an undefeated record of 58-0-3. These 61 games contributed to the streak of 63 consecutive games without a defeat, an NCAA record. After leaving Washington Dobie went on to coach Navy, Cornell and Boston. His career record of 180-45-15 earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.
