Rainier School, Seattle, circa 1905
In 1891, Seattle's Rainier School opened in the Rainier Heights neighborhood with 422 students and twelve teachers. The area grew so fast that by 1901, there were almost twice as many students and twenty teachers. The school closed in 1940 but later reopened as part of Edison Technical School. Seattle's King Street Station was built between 1904 and 1906 for the Great Northern Railroad. The St. Paul, Minnesota, architectural firm of Reed & Stem designed the station, patterning its tall clock tower after a famous bell tower in Venice, Italy.
