In 1906, music educator and conductor James Hamilton Howe (d. 1934) proposed the formation of a permanent choral-symphony society in Seattle. Many local musicians took an interest, and the venture was backed by the Ladies Musical Club, the Schubert Society, the Chamber of Commerce, and other local organizations.
