Seattle company, International News, was known for bold graphic prints like what is shown on this shirt. International News, established in 1983, was formed with the partnership of two other Seattle companies: an executive from Britania and founders of Shah Safari.

Brothers Raj and Akhil Shah launched Shah Safari as teenagers in 1975. The Seattle company designed, manufactured, and imported lightweight, breezy gauze shirts from India. After just eight years in business, Shah Safari owned 24 percent of the national young men’s woven shirt market. Michael J. Fox wore a Shah Safari shirt in the 1985 movie "Back to the Future."…

In the 1980s Seattle was a hub for jeans and casualwear companies. The trend began with Brittania and Shah Safari in the 1970s and quickly multiplied. These jeans are from Code Bleu Japan, a Seattle company started by Mel Matsui, Tom Herman and Carol Jones in 1984. All the founders had formerly worked for Brittania.

White Shah Safari shirt from the Goodwill Games, 1990
On July 20, 1990, the Goodwill Games opened in Seattle. Conceived as an apolitical alternative to the Olympics, the games promised international goodwill through world-class competition. Over 2,000 athletes from 54 countries competed in 21 sports events at the University of Washington and other cities in Washington State. Seattle company Shah Safari supplied these shirts to volunteers for the games.…

It was known for bold, screen-printed graphics, often featuring the “International News” branded text. The donor of this bag bought it around 1989 from Zebraclub, the retail store on 1st Avenue owned by the International News team and used as a “laboratory”…
