Temporary Oral History Specialist Isabel Bartosh working on a transcript, 2024
Over the last 18 months, MOHAI’s Library team has been refreshing our process of creating transcriptions for oral histories, thanks in part to a 4Culture Collections Care Grant that help fund the work of Temporary Oral History Specialist Isabel Bartosh in 2024.
The core of this work required aligning our Transcription Style Guide with best practices in the oral history field. These best practices advocate for creating transcriptions which balance clarity and accessibility for future researchers and preserving the human voices of the narrators. Together, this creates a record of the oral history that is easily accessible while preserving both the conversational nature of the interviewer and the narrator.
Below, explore a selection of the 15 interviews that had transcripts created using this new style guide.
