November is Hip Hop History Month! Come join MOHAI Mercantile in a celebration of Seattle’s early hip hop scene and the musicians who pioneered the revolutionary sound of rap music in Seattle.

Music journalist, producer, and author Novocaine132 will talk about his new book The Birth of Seattle Rap with hip hop historian Dr. Daudi Abe, and explore the early 1980s and the groundbreaking generation of young musicians like DJ Nasty-Nes, The Emerald Street Boys, Sir Mix-a-lot, and many more.

Doors open at 6pm for music and mingling, food and drink available for purchase.

Presentation begins at 7pm, followed by a book signing with the author.

Ben Camp aka Novocaine132

Ben Camp

Ben Camp, aka Novocaine132 was born in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington. He’s been a music journalist since the mid-1990s at magazines including The Flavor, The Rocket, and The Stranger. He has directed three short documentary films, and from 2020 to 2022, he executive produced four albums for Ever Rap Records in Seattle. His interest in rap music goes back to his first rap cassette by KTEL in 1984, containing memorable hip hop classics like “Electric Kingdom” and “Tour De France.”

Daudi Abe is a Seattle-based professor, writer, researcher, and historian who has taught and written about culture, race, gender, education, communication, hip-hop, and sports for over 20 years. He is the author of Emerald Street: A History of Hip Hop in Seattle.
