MOHAI Mercantile is proud to host the official book launch event for Dr. Carver Gayton’s autobiography Odyssey of a Seattle Native Son!
Dr. Carver Gayton is a past director of Affirmative Action Programs at the University of Washington, past executive director of the Northwest African American Museum, former Boeing executive, and a former FBI agent. He is a longtime leader in education reform and workforce training, and his story bears witness to Seattle’s experience of race and the importance of family, teachers, teamwork, and building bridges in the context of the civil rights movement.
Join us to hear Jennifer Ott, environmental historian and executive director at HistoryLink, in conversation with Dr. Gayton about his family roots in abolition, his civic life, his rich perspective on the last century, and the necessity of taking a stand.
Doors open at 6pm, for an hour of community building including representatives from Northwest African American Museum and The Black Heritage Society of Washington State, and an activity from the Black Genealogy Research Group. Drinks and snacks available for purchase!
