For more than 100 years, South Asians have migrated to the Pacific Northwest creating deep ties between the two regions. Each wave reflects the global and economic politics of its time and brings unique influences to the Pacific Northwest.

Moderated by Dr. Amy Bhatt, this panel brings together local leaders in South Asian scholarship to examine the political, cultural and historical impacts of these migration waves.

Dr. Amy Bhatt

Dr. Amy Bhatt is associate director of gender and women’s studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). She is the coauthor of Roots and Reflections: South Asians in the Pacific Northwest.

Bidisha Biswas

Bidisha Biswas

Bidisha Biswas is Professor of Political Science at Western Washington University. She obtained her PhD in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has published and spoken extensively on diaspora politics and immigration policy. Her book, Indian Immigrant Women and Work: The American experience, was published in 2016.
