This photo, taken by Eric Hegg on July 4, 1899, shows Captain Jack Cawford on his horse in Dawson. Cawford was an American and a veteran of both the Civil War and the Indian Wars of the 1860s and 1870s. In 1899, he was elected marshal of the holiday parade. After the parade, he recited a poem he had written in honor of the occasion.
