Born in Scotland in 1832, James Murray Colman came to the United States and began working in the lumber industry. In 1872 he moved to Seattle, where he operated Henry Yesler's mill. He built the Colman Building on First Avenue and the Colman Dock on Seattle's waterfront. He also founded the Seattle & Walla Walla Railroad, which was eventually bought out by the Northern Pacific Railway. Colman died in 1906.

Typed on verso: JM Colman, father of Lawrence Colman. Colman building and dock bear the family name, also Colman grade school.
