From 1902 to 1917, three temporary wooden bridges were built over the west water way of the Duwamish River, connecting Harbor Island to West Seattle (annexed by Seattle in 1907). By 1924 a permanent steel low-level bascule bridge, West Spokane Street Bridge No. 1 (North), had been built and was in use until 1978.
This west-facing view shows one of the old wooden bridges as it turns north along West Spokane Street (now West Marginal Way SW). The Hotel West at the right of the frame was located at 1701 W Spokane Street. On the hill in the center of the frame, the Grand View Apartment building, was located at 3708 18th SW (now 18th Ave SW). The advertisement on the Hotel West for Lifestaff refers to a prohibition-era cereal beer brewed by Bayview Brewery.
