The many advances in medicine in the late 19th century demanded well-trained doctors and nurses. The first nursing schools were in hospitals. In Seattle, Providence Hospital started its nursing school in 1907.

In this photo, probably taken around 1911, the nursing staff of Providence Hospital stands on the front steps of the new Providence Hospital building at Seventeenth Avenue and Jefferson Street. The building, was completed in the summer of 1911, and patients were moved in in September of that year.
