The winter of 1896-1897 was particularly harsh in Seattle; a November record was set in 1896 with an accumulation of 20.5 inches of snow. Here, a young boy and his dog pose on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and Marion Street. The boy looking on from the right edge of the frame (who seems to have just been in a snowball fight with the boy in the foreground) is leaning on the front staircase of the Stacy mansion, built in 1885 by real estate investor Martin Van Buren Stacy (1837-1901).
