Order an ImageThe Great Fire of June 6, 1889 was a significant turning point in Seattle's history and changed both the physical and political landscapes of the City, destroying 100 acres of Seattle's business district and waterfront. The city didn't take much time to mourn; most businesses decided to rebuild where they had been, and rebuilding began almost immediately. Relief bureaus were able to close as quickly as June 20, as tent-restaurants had been set up quickly, and were able to meet people's needs.
This image taken at Third Avenue and Union Street shows a group of people posing amongst goods salvaged from the fire. The large house behind the tent was the home of Charles Latimer Denny (1861-1919) and his wife Viretta C. Chambers Denny (1863-1951), built in 1887 by the architectural firm of Boone and Meeker.
