Yukoners on the summit of Chilkoot Pass, Alaska, circa 1897
Order an ImageThe summit of Chilkoot Pass marked the boundary between Alaska and Canada. Here, each Klondike stampeder had to check in with the Northwest Mounted Police and ensure them that he or she carried enough food and other supplies to last a year. The border was also a good stopping point for a photo.
In this photo, probably taken in 1897 or 1898, nine gold seekers pause for group photo taken at the boundary between Alaska and Canada.
