Order an Image
The United States entered World War I in April 1917. A number of American women drove ambulances and other vehicles for the American Red Cross during the war. In this photo, some of Seattle's Red Cross drivers line up with their ambulances on Western Avenue. The women wear the uniform of the Red Cross Motor Corps. The sign outside the wooden building in the background reads "O'Leary Apartments."
