Farmers' Day at Victory Square, June 1943
Order an ImageIn June 1943, during World War II, the call went out for thousands of volunteers to help harvest crops on land formerly worked by Japanese farmers. To kick off the campaign, 65 boys and girls, ages 14 to 17, moved into a labor camp near Auburn on June 28 and started picking peas and corn. Other young volunteers came to Victory Square in downtown Seattle to publicize the need for help.//In this photo, taken in late June 1943, young farm volunteers from Bothell, Auburn and Kent ride on a farm wagon in downtown Seattle.
