When World War II ended, many soldiers and sailors returned to the United States through the Port of Seattle. Once on land, they were greeted with cartons of fresh milk. Even decades later, many veterans still remembered how good the milk tasted after several years of drinking powdered or evaporated milk at the front.

In this March 1946 photo, soldiers and one member of the Womens Army Corps happily drink their cartons of fresh Carnation milk at the Seattle waterfront. The photo was probably taken at the U.S. Army Port of Embarkation.
