On December 18, 1944, the United States Government announced that Japanese Americans in incarceration camps could return to their homes after January 1, 1945. In Seattle, and elsewhere on the West Coast, this was a controversial issue. When the first returnees arrived in Seattle in January, some found a cold welcome and vandalized property. The Seattle Civic Unity Committee, the University Friends Meeting (Quakers) and other groups and individuals worked hard to reduce racial tension and ensure a smooth resettlement.

This photo, taken in or near Seattle in 1945, shows members of the so-called "Uni" group assisting farmer Kametaro Funai and his family. Mr. Funai drives the tractor. The man in the left background is Floyd Schmoe (1895-2001), a prominent Seattle peace activist.
