Seattle's deaf students went to class at T.T. Minor School. In 1939, the school started classes for preschool children with hearing disabilities. In addition to learning how to speak, the students learned to read lips and recognize certain sounds using hearing aids. They also began learning to read. When the teacher rang a bell or beat a drum, the children pointed at the words "bell" or "drum" on the blackboard.

This November 1939 photo shows a teacher and five deaf preschool children in a classroom at T.T. Minor School. The children wear hearing aids with earphones which help them hear what's going on. The teacher beats a drum while the students try to recognize the sound.
