Order an ImageSince the later part of the 19th century, Seattle has been a transshipment point for goods traveling between the United States and other Pacific Ocean ports. At the docks, longshoremen transferred the cargo between ships and the railroad. In the 1930s, the men did most of this work by hand; by the 1990s, many dockworkers had been replaced by machinery.
In this 1930s photo, taken at the Seattle waterfront, several longshoremen slide a crate up a makeshift ramp into a waiting Santa Fe freight car. The cargo had just been unloaded from a ship.
