Order an ImageSince the latter part of the 19th century, Seattle has been a transshipment point for goods traveling between the United States and other Pacific Ocean ports. At the docks, longshoremen transferred the cargo between ships and the railroad. In the 1930s, they did most of this work by hand; by the 1990s, many dockworkers had been replaced by machinery.
In this 1930s photo, several longshoremen steady a load of crates being lowered from the ship to the dock. They will load the cargo into the waiting Santa Fe freight car.
