Order an ImageOn September 22, 1940, a King County deputy sheriff found a family camped by the side of West Marginal Way. Harry Cooper had left North Dakota with his seven children, hoping to find a job in the Pacific Northwest. When found, the family had had nothing to eat for three days but some vegetables brought by neighbors.
This photo shows the Cooper family camped by the side of West Marginal Way, south of downtown Seattle. The Coopers were but one of many families who came to the Pacific Northwest to look for work in the 1930s and 1940s.
