Order an ImageAfter much research, the United States Bureau of Reclamation and its contractor, the MWAK Company, developed a very strong type of concrete for the Grand Coulee Dam. Two concrete mixing plants built at the dam site supplied 640 cubic yards of concrete per hour, breaking all earlier records. Traveling cranes moved the concrete to the building site in huge buckets.
This photo, taken around 1937, shows a group of workmen emptying concrete into the wooden form at the top of one of the immense vertical blocks which form the foundation of Grand Coulee Dam. Seventy-two hours later, the men would move the form upwards and add the next five feet of concrete.
