Engineers Town near site of Grand Coulee dam, circa 1937
Order an ImageThousands of workers from all over the United States poured into the central Washington to work on the Grand Coulee Dam. Whether they were engineers, office workers or unskilled labor, all of these people and their families needed places to live. In December 1933, at the start of the dam project, workers graded the land for Engineers Town. Six months later, the town had 75 houses and an administration building. By 1936, a school, stores and more than 100 more homes had been added.
This photo, taken around 1937, shows Engineers Town and the Columbia River near the construction site of Grand Coulee Dam. The dam (center background) is in the early stages of construction.
