Order an ImageThe Blue Angels are the US Navy's flight demonstration squadron, founded in 1946. They have flown in Seattle's Seafair air show almost every year since the air shows began in 1972. The Blue Angels have flown eight different models of demonstration aircraft in their history. In this image taken by photographer Josef Scaylea they fly new F/A-18 Hornets over Lake Washington. As of 2020, the Blue Angels still fly Hornets.
Scaylea (1913-2004) worked for 35 years as chief photographer for the Seattle Times, winning over 1000 awards for his photographs highlighting the scenery and people in the Pacific Northwest. He donated a collection of his photographs and photography equipment to MOHAI in 1993.
