The Blue Angels are the US Navy's flight demonstration squadron, founded in 1946. They have flown in Seattle's Seafair air show almost every year since the air shows began in 1972.

Photographer Josef Scaylea (1913-2004) worked for 35 years as chief photographer for the Seattle Times, winning over 1000 awards for his photographs highlighting the scenery and people in the Pacific Northwest. He donated a collection of his photographs and photography equipment to MOHAI in 1993. On the back of this photo he notes, "News Feature - SeaFair. The Blue Angels. A good photograph imparts information as well as scenic beauty. Here the great number of boats reafirm [sic] Seattle's reputation as the boating capitol, Mt. Rainier our scenic grandeur, the Blue Angels our aviation heritage."
