Order an ImagePhotographer Josef Scaylea (1913-2004) worked for 35 years as chief photographer for the Seattle Times, winning over 1000 awards for his photographs highlighting the scenery and people in the Pacific Northwest. He donated a collection of his photographs and photography equipment to MOHAI in 1993.
Several of Scaylea's most well-known photographs featured rowers on local waters. This photo of a University of Washington crew practice during a March snow was featured in Sport Illustrated.

Handwritten on verso: Sports. 3/62. Cold Workout, UW Shells in a March Blizzard 1962. Featured in Sports Illustrated magazine. Waiting to make a routine shot of UW crews daily workout a blizzard blew in out of nowhere and completely unexpected. The crews took it in stride going about business as usual. Caption writers had a field day with this one. Zeroing in on the barefoot prints on the right.
