The Indigenous peoples of the Columbia Plateau include many different tribal groups. The Plateau peoples' historic lands are in what is now British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. In Washington, the Yakama, Nez Perce, Spokane, Colville, and other Plateau tribes live east of the Cascade Range in the Columbia River watershed.

Here, two Indigenous women pose for their portrait in a Yakima-area photographer's studio around 1900. The seated woman is identified as Cadina Chenoweth (1875-1940), daughter of Young Chief Chenoweth of the Mid-Columbia and Cascade Tribes. Her companion holds a beaded bag, which was a popular item among Indigenous people in the region at the time.
