The Indigenous peoples of the Columbia Plateau include many different tribal groups. The Plateau peoples' historic lands are in what is now British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. In Washington, the Yakama, Nez Perce, Spokane, Colville, and other Plateau tribes live east of the Cascade Range in the Columbia River watershed.

In this portrait, part of a series taken in a Yakima-area photographer's studio, a young Indigenous man poses wearing a beaded belt, necklace, choker, armbands, and earrings. The large horn-shaped dentalium shells in his necklace came from the waters off Vancouver Island and were traded long distances to inland tribes. Traditionally, both men and women wore shell and bead ornaments. The dentalium shells were often interspersed with blue or red glass beads.
