The Indigenous peoples of the Columbia Plateau include many different tribal groups. The Plateau peoples' historic lands are in what is now British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. In Washington, the Yakama, Nez Perce, Spokane, Colville, and other Plateau tribes live east of the Cascade Range in the Columbia River watershed.

In this image, four Indigenous women and one man pose in the studio of a Yakima-area photographer around the turn of the 20th century. The two women on the right hold woven cornhusk bags, and one woman on the left carries a beaded bag. Also notable are their necklaces with large shell pendants, their shell earrings, and their beaded belts. The young man holds a gilded mirror and wears a woolen blanket around his waist. The large windows which provided light for the portrait would have been cropped out in the final copy.
