Mattie Spencer, Klikitat woman, circa 1900
Order an ImageThe Klickitat (also spelled Klikitat) are an Indigenous group whose historic lands are along the Klickitat and White Salmon Rivers east of the Cascade mountains in Washington. Their language is related to the language of the Yakama, their eastern neighbors. The Klickitat fished for salmon in the rivers of their homeland and were also involved in trade among different Indigenous groups because of their convenient location near the Columbia River between Coast Salish tribes to the west and other tribes further east. In 1855, the Klickitat signed a treaty ceding their land to the United States while reserving rights to fish, hunt, and gather at all usual and accustomed places. The Klickitat were assigned to live on the Yakama reservation and today most Klickitats are part of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation.
