Designed by prolific Seattle architect Victor W. Voorheess (1876-1970) for real estate developer Joseph Vance, the Seattle Engineering School opened in 1918 in the Lower Queen Anne neighborhood. The three-story school contained 148 homes for students, many of whom were qualified blacksmiths, electricians, or steam engineers retraining as automobile mechanics. In 1920 the school opened the Kuay, a training garage that operated for more than 50 years.
In this image students and teachers pose in front of the school building, bounded by Queen Anne Avenue, Roy Street, and Mercer Street. In 1979 the building was converted into apartments, and in 1998 it was refurbished and reopened as the boutique MarQueen Hotel.
