Index Mountain, circa 1898
Order an ImageIn 1890, Amos D. Gunn bought land on the north fork of the Skykomish River, in southern Snohomish County. He named a nearby mountain Mount Index because its sharp crags reminded him of a hand with an upward pointing index finger. He named his new settlement Index, after the mountain.
