Steamer "Anacortes of Decatur," circa 1915
Order an ImageSmall, wooden-hulled steamers, known as the Mosquito Fleet, crisscrossed Puget Sound in the first two decades of the 20th century carrying people and goods from port to port. The name originated from an article in the Seattle Times, "At 5:00 in Seattle, the little commuter steamers scurry off to their destinations like a swarm of mosquitos."
This postcard, probably made in the 1910s, shows the steamer, "Anacortes of Decatur." The vessel may have been one of the daily steamers which ran between Decatur Island, in the San Juan Islands, and Anacortes.
