Sisters Joanna Eckstein (1903-1983) and Babette (Eckstein) Joseph Levinson (1906-1977) were the only children of prominent Seattle civic leader Nathan Eckstein (1873-1945) and Mina A. (Schwabacher) Eckstein (1877-1942). Nathan Eckstein Middle School is named in honor of Nathan's service as a member of the Seattle School Board. Joanna Eckstein was also civic-minded; she was president of Seattle Children's Home (now Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center), and was an active patron of local arts.
