In 1949, younger members of Washington State Press Club formed the Ale & Quail Society. A year later, as the Seafair Pirates, they joined with other groups to create Seattle’s first Seafair. Starting with a boisterous landing in West Seattle, the Pirates still actively and noisily participate in many Seafair activities. Their main objectives are to have fun and to support the community.

In this image, two Seafair Pirates march along Northeast Bothell Way towards Lake City. They carry giant slingshots and are accompanied by a Seattle Police vehicle. Lake City’s Western Days Festival continues to be one of many community Seafair activities.
