Charles Malmo emigrated from Norway in 1878, arrived in Seattle in 1891, and established Malmo Seed and Nursery Company in 1893. He opened his first garden store at 916 Second Avenue in what would become downtown Seattle. Over the years, the Malmo company expanded to several locations and became known for its fine plants, trees, and landscaping services.
In this image, two men hoist a evergreen tree, its root ball wrapped in burlap, into a Malmo & Co. truck, probably at the company’s property in Georgetown. The company raised much of its nursery stock at this location.
