A new home stadium for the Seattle Mariners to replace the Kingdome was first proposed in 1995. Construction broke ground on March 8, 1997 after an approval process marked by disputes over how to fund the project, and disagreements between the Mariners and the Public Facilities District, which owned and operated the stadium. Construction lasted 27 months and the stadium opened in the middle of the 1999 baseball season. Named Safeco Field under a 20-year sponsorship deal, the stadium was renamed T-Mobile Park in 2019. The stadium's most prominent feature is its retractable roof, which affords both the rain protection of an indoor stadium and the sweeping views and atmosphere of an outdoor stadium.

This card commemorates the Seattle Mariners’ first game at Safeco Field on July 15, 1999. The game was against the San Diego Padres, who defeated the Mariners 3-2. The back of the card lists facts about Safeco Field.
