Alfred John (“Al”) Young (1946-2022) was a former World Champion drag racer, and the first Asian-American World Champion race car driver. Young campaigned his 1970 Dodge Challenger for over 25 years, won the American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) World Championship, and several AHRA and National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) titles. For most of his racing career, Young was sponsored by the Bardahl Corporation. Al Young was inducted into the NHRA Northwest Division Hall of Fame in 2019. He donated his green Dodge Challenger to the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) in 2007. Al Young studied English literature at the University of Washington, and worked as a schoolteacher in Seattle Public Schools for 37 years, retiring in 2008.
