The Seattle Gay Culture Center was one of the early initiatives of the Queen City Development Corporation (QCDC), founded in 1996 by local activist David Schraer. The QCDC was the result of discussions between Washington State LGBT leaders and experts in community and economic development about building institutional capacity and addressing gaps in services available to Washington's LGBT community. Later called Queen City Community Development (QCCD), the non-profit’s original initiatives included affordable LGBT senior housing and a community center. The Seattle Gay Culture Center, the early iteration of the new community center, operated out of temporary spaces while the organization raised funds for a permanent facility. In 2002 the center, renamed the Seattle LGBT Community Center, opened in its own space on East Pike Street in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The Community Center offered support and services, held events, and provided meeting and office space to the LGBT community until 2008, when it closed due to financial difficulties.
