In 2001 Seattle's Pike Place Market Foundation held a fund raiser that collected more than $400,000 for Market Foundation programs including a medical clinic, a child-care center, a food bank, and a senior center. The fund raiser, "Pigs on Parade," featured about 170 fiberglass pigs designed by local artists and organizations in homage to Rachel, the Market's beloved life-size bronze piggy bank. The pigs were displayed outdoors around the city from May through September, then auctioned live and online in October. The event was inspired by a cow exhibit in Switzerland that eventually was copied by many American cities.
The poster pictured here features photographs of many of the pigs created for "Pigs on Parade," including "Penny the Inside Out Pig," who is covered from snout to tail in copper pennies, and is the pig who raised the most money, $21,000, at the live auction.
