Started in 1981, Festival Sundiata is a festival of Northwest African American visual and performing arts held at the Seattle Center. Since 1997, Festival Sundiata has been part of the Seattle Center's Festal season, which celebrates various ethnic and international communities in the Seattle region.
This poster advertises the first Festival Sundiata with a photo of a sculpture by James Washington, Jr. (1909-2000), a prominent painter and sculptor of the Northwest School of artists. The three-day festival included musical performances, a visual arts show, films, a sculpture symposium, poetry reading, reggae dance party, and a gospel show.
