The punk and alternative music band The Replacements was formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1979. The band was composed of the guitarist and vocalist Paul Westerberg, guitarist Bob Stinson, bass guitarist Tommy Stinson, and drummer Chris Mars for most of its career.

This concert at the Metropolis appears to have been sponsored by local radio station KCMU (now KEXP), and The Replacements were joined by local bands The Accused and 10 Minute Warning. The Accused was created in 1981 in Oak Harbor, Washington, by bassist Chibon 'Chewy' Batterman, drummer Dana Collins, and guitarist Tommy Niemeyer. John Dahlin was the vocalist from 1982 to 1984, when he was replaced by Blaine Cook of the Fartz. 10 Minute Warning (also known as Ten Minute Warning) was a hardcore punk band from Seattle. The group was formed in 1982 by The Fartz members Paul Solger and Duff McKagan with vocalist Steve Verwolf, bassist David Garrigues, and future Mother Love Bone drummer, Greg Gilmore. The Seattle production company Holy War Cadets is also credited on the poster.

The Metropolis was an all-ages music venue located at 207 Second Avenue in Pioneer Square. Started by Hugo Piotten, the Metropolis provided stable access to teens interested in alternative music and culture, where they could see local and national punk bands and hang out with their peers. In the two years of its existence (1983-1984), the Metropolis hosted many of the musicians and bands that would go on to be major players in the Grunge era.
