The Metropolis was an all-ages music venue located at 207 Second Avenue in Pioneer Square. Started by Hugo Piotten, the Metropolis provided stable access to teens interested in alternative music and culture, where they could see local and national punk bands and hang out with their peers. In the two years of its existence (1983-1984), the Metropolis hosted many of the musicians and bands that would go on to be major players in the Grunge era.

This 1983 schedule of performances at the Metropolis between December 9th, 1983, and January 28, 1984, lists the following bands/events: Accused, U-Men, Fastbacks, Red Masque, Altered, DOA, Industrial Waste Banned, Rejectors, Truth Decay, Butthole Surfers, 10 Minute Warning, Deranged Diction, 54/40, Color Twigs, Grapes of Wrath, Western Family, Wipers, Circle 7, Room 9, Junco Run, Bundle of Hiss, PMA, Condemned to Death, Spluii Numa, Detonators, Aerobic Death, Nurse, Young Pioneers, Fred, Circle 1, Pelle Melle, Chains of Hell, Sex Mutants, Special Party with John Foster, Supreme Cool Being, Rich Jansen, Legion of Honor, Nuclear Exchange Benefit with Moral Lepers, and Northwest Passage Benefit.
