A short-lived Seattle venue now frequently cited as the birthplace of grunge, The Rock Theater, at 410 Fifth Avenue South (and later briefly in Lower Queen Anne), actually had two performance spaces: the Omni Room and Gorilla Gardens. Often referred to as simply Gorilla Gardens, the club hosted all-ages shows for out-of-town bands as well as local punk and metal bands for about a year between 1984-1985.

This debut issue of "Subcharge," billed as the "Rock Theatre News Magazine," was published in February 1985. It includes reviews of several Rock Theatre performances: Sonic Youth, U-Men, and Green River at the Omni Room on January 19, 1985; and Life in General, Sociological Hazzard, and Ministry of Love at Gorilla Gardens on February 1, 1985. The issue also includes an interview with Kelly Mitchell of the band Life in General, movie reviews, and more.
