Order an Image
Many gatherings and vigils took place in Seattle after the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center. The September 15 Flower Vigil at the Seattle Center was one of the largest. People were invited to bring cut flowers to the International Fountain, and by the end of the following day, the fountain had been filled with flowers some two feet deep. These were later composted for a new memorial garden at Seattle Center.

In this image, people surround the International Fountain at Seattle Center during the early hours of the Flower Vigil.
