The Fremont Baptist Church was established in 1892 when a small group of local Baptists and the Rev. E.G. Wheeler began to meet in the chapel car "Evangel," provided by the American Baptist Publication Society and parked between the Fremont Fire Station and the small railroad depot at the corner of Fremont Avenue and Ewing Street (now N. 34th Street). When the rail car left, the church met in rented storefronts, and had several pastors over seven years, until Reverend James Cairns arrived in 1899. Under his leadership, the congregation bought property and built the wooden church shown in this photo. The first Fremont Baptist Church building was dedicated on March 24, 1901. In 1924, the wooden church was demolished and a new brick structure for the growing congregation built. Dedicated in December 1924, the brick Fremont Baptist Church is still active on N. 36th Street as of 2025.
