AYPE monthly pass in a handmade holder, Seattle, 1909
Order an ImageThe Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE) was a world's fair held in Seattle to publicize the development of the Pacific Northwest. The fairgrounds were located on the campus of the University of Washington (UW) and were open from June 1, 1909, to October 16, 1909. Several of the buildings and the landscaping survive, continuing to shape the layout of the campus.
The monthly pass pictured here was issued in the form of a book of pre-paid ticket coupons to Benjamin Williams Mitchell (1888-1973). The tickets were non-transferable, and a photograph of Mr. Mitchell is attached to the inside cover of the booklet. The booklet's green leather cover was handmade, likely by Mr. Mitchell. During the AYPE Mr. Mitchell worked as a night watchman on campus while also attending the UW pharmacy school; after graduation he ran a pharmacy in Lake Stevens until his retirement in 1960.
Handwritten on front cover: "A.Y.P. 1909. B. W. Mitchell Seattle Wash."
